SUMMARY:A Concert of Art Songs: Rachmaninoff\, Fauré\, and Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:Soprano Jennifer O’Brien and pianist Stephen James will present a concert of the music of some of the great song composers – Rachmaninoff\, Fauré\, and Gershwin – and the premiere of a new set of songs by Dr. James on poems of Mary Oliver on November 23 at 2:00 pm in the Falcetti Performance Hall. \nStephen James:  \n \nStephen James completed his doctoral degree in composition at Boston University\, where he received the graduate composition prize in 1984\, the Malloy Miller Composition Award in 1986\, and an award for continuing musical excellence in 1987.  He is a pianist as well as a composer and has performed for the Tanglewood Music Center Chamber Series\, the WICN Radio concert series at Mechanics Hall (Worcester\, MA)\, the American Repertory Theater\, Alea III\, the Omnibus Series at Boston University\, the The Essex Chamber Music Players\, and on many other concert series in New England.​ \n​Dr. James was a 1985 Crofts Fellow in Composition at the Tanglewood Music Center and a member of the Center for Compositional Study at the Aspen Music Festival in 1986.  Performances of his works include premieres by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston and the Atlantic Brass Quintet\, commissions from the Washington Music Ensemble and the Newburyport Choral Society\, and performances by the Society for New Music (Syracuse\, NY) and the Fellows of the Music Center at Tanglewood.  He has taught piano performance\, music theory and  composition at Boston University\, Worcester State University\, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth\, Anna Maria College and Bridgewater State University. \nJennie O’Brien: \n \nJennie O’Brien is a graduate of Boston University with Bachelor of music\, one in Vocal Performance and the other in Music Education and a Master’s in Education from University of Massachusetts Boston specializing in teaching  students with visual impairments. A soloist for several area churches\, Jennie has also performed with Newton Choral Society\, Longy Chamber Singers\, Broadmoor Chamber Singers\, Theater\, Revels\, Inc.\, In Good Company\, and her own trio Crooked Mowth. Jennie teaches Voice\, Theatre Arts\, vocal ensembles\, and independent living skills at Perkins School for the Blind and also teaches at New England Conservatory in the Continuing Education department and a board member of the theater group In Good Company.

The program begins with Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano\, whose shifting colors and textures evoke light\, reflection\, and movement. Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata follows\, its tender lyricism and graceful lines breathing with warmth and song. The journey culminates in Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata in G minor\, where intensity and nostalgia intertwine before dissolving into silence. She has performed across the U.S. and internationally as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and orchestral player\, appearing on renowned stages including Jordan Hall\, Boston Symphony Hall\, Tanglewood Music Center\, Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre\, Houston’s Wortham Theater Center\, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts\, Norton Museum of Art\, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music\, among many others. She performed as a soloist with the Plano Symphony Orchestra\, Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra\, and Fall River Symphony\, and has been featured in the Brandeis University Concert Series\, Fulbright Concert at Harvard\, Boston New Music Initiative\, and Artists of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. Dr. Kim holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree\, has served as artistic director and cellist of the CK Ensemble and the Gioia Duo\, and is currently a member of the Arcada String Quartet\, which recently released the album He is Exalted. \nPianist Han Nah Son has been praised for her electrifying performances and profound artistic sensitivity. In 2021-22 he was judge at the Budapest Liszt International Piano Competition and performed and gave masterclasses and lectures at the Royal Academy of Music\, London\, Rice University\, Northwestern University\, Cambridge University\, New York City Harvard Club and Bangkok\, Thailand. In the coming year Sharon will perform and teach in Brazil\, South Korea and Israel. For several years he was the Director of the Young Pianists Artist Program at Boston University Tanglewood Institute. \n“His performance brought a veritable roar of approval from the audience\,” wrote the Irish Times\, after Pavel Nersessian received the 1st Prize in the GPA Dublin International Piano Competition in 1991. Being one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation in Russia\, he is known for his ability to play equally convincingly in the whole palette of the piano repertoire. He won prizes in the Beethoven Competition in Vienna in 1985\, the Paloma O’Shea Competition in Santander\, and the Tokyo Competition.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE event of inspiring music\, learning\, and performance at the BPAA’s 2025 Piano Festival and 25th Year Anniversary Celebration. The program begins with a masterclass series led by distinguished pianist and teacher Tim McFarland\, who will work closely with six talented participants to refine their interpretations and deepen their artistry. The featured masterclass performers\, Chia Ying Lee\, Ramona Leeman\, Robert Berkowitz\, Carl Di Casoli\, Kevin Schwarz\, and Robert Finley\, will present works by Bach\, Schubert\, Chopin and Ravel. Audience members will get to observe the teaching process and witness the craft of shaping music in real time. \nFollowing the masterclass\, we invite you to stay for the recital program\, where 24 of our BPAA members will showcase their polished performances. The recital features solo and duo piano works spanning Baroque\, Classical\, Romantic\, and contemporary repertoire\, including women composers and own compositions by some of our BPAA members. \nCome celebrate a day where teaching meets performance\, and artistry comes alive on stage. \nMasterclass Faculty\nTim McFarland\, a former student of Russell Sherman\, performs frequently in the Boston area as a recitalist\, soloist with orchestra\, and as chamber music collaborator. He has premiered works by Robert Ceeley\, Peter Lieberson\, David Patterson\, and Daniel Pinkham. Mr. McFarland is a Senior Lecturer of Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Boston\, and serves as the Music Director of the Belmont Symphony Orchestra.
